These blog posts usually come from conversations in the gym or things I notice. Right now, the observation is that nearly 1/4 of you are on my MIA list. That means it's been five or more days since you've been to the gym. When I reach out, the answers usually come down to the same thing: life got busy and the routine slipped.
I'm not writing this to guilt anyone. Life happens. Work gets crazy, kids get sick, and suddenly a week has gone by. I get it. But I also know how easy it is for one missed week to turn into a missed month, which is why I check up on those who’ve been absent.
If this is you, here are some things to think about.
Habits beat motivation every time. Motivation is great when it shows up, but it's unreliable. I can say with confidence that no one in the gym is motivated every single day. It comes and goes with your mood, your sleep, your stress. Habits are what carry you on the days you don't feel like it. The people who get the best results here are the most consistent. Habit building is especially challenging for those just starting a routine, so it becomes important to set yourself up for success (more on that below).
Stop waiting to feel ready. If you're waiting for the motivation to come back, you might be waiting a while. Action usually comes first.
Decide who you are. There's a big difference between "I'm trying to work out more" and "I'm someone who works out." You don't debate brushing your teeth (I hope). You just do it. Training can be like that too. You identify as a person who takes care of yourself.
Picture the future you. Think about what you want to be able to do in 5, 10, 20 years. Every session is a deposit towards that goal. If that feels too far off, visualize how great you will feel AFTER you make a workout happen today.
Set yourself up to win.
So if you're on the MIA list, consider this your nudge. If you’re good to go, keep that habit! Need help? I am here for you.
