"Any Movement is Good Movement." We disagree.

Moving is better than not moving. Sure. But, that's like saying that eating is better than not eating. Both things...moving and eating...are integral to survival, but, just like the right food will make you healthy, so will the right movement.

Day after day of high-intensity exercise, nothing but cardio, boot camp programs with hundreds of reps, HIIT classes with no regard for movement quality...these aren't the optimal ways to move. Just like fast food and sodas aren't the optimal ways to eat.

So, what does a good program look like?

  • You don't work in the same energy system every day.
  • It incorporates resistance (strength) training.
  • It includes functional movements at tempo to reinforce proper movement patterns.
  • It's phasic.
  • There are progressions.
  • It's safe.
  • Recovery days are scheduled.
  • Intensity isn't the priority. Appropriate intensity is.
  • Appropriate volume is paramount.
  • It includes hingeing, squatting, carrying, pulling and pushing in different planes as well as bracing.
  • It's not random.
  • It promotes longevity.
  • There is a purpose.

Yes, that's a lot to think about. And, each one of the bullet points above could be its own article topic. But, I hope it sheds a little light on what to look for in a program or coach/trainer. If you have questions about your current program, feel free to contact us!
