Bet On Yourself

As most of you know, Rob and I also own a supplement company. Recently, I’ve been calling some of our top customers to get to know them a little better - what their day looks like, how they train and eat, what their pain points are.

A few weeks ago, I had a call that inspired the hell out of me.

It was with a guy named Mark who was on the show “My 600-lb Life.” This isn’t our typical client avatar, and I was intrigued when listening to his story.

He began his fitness journey weighing 715 pounds. Over the course of the past year and a half, he’s lost over 300 pounds ON HIS OWN.

Doctors were pushing weight loss surgery on him. They told him he couldn’t lose the weight himself and that fired him up!

He began on the first day of his journey by walking 30 steps. He told himself that the next day, he would walk 35. It snowballed from there.

I said, “Wow, you must have felt like you were staring up a mountain.” He told me he didn’t. He knew he had to do this.

Eventually, he joined a gym and began lifting weights. I can only imagine his fear of walking for the first time. But he did it.

He then traded pizza and junk food for chicken and vegetables.

Today, he’s walking four miles a day at a park before work. When his busy schedule working at a travel agency and launching a new business doesn’t allow him to go to the gym, he hops on a rower at home.

Weighing 397 pounds today, he still has a long way to go, but he’s motivated because since losing the weight, he’s gotten a girlfriend, several promotions at work, and bought a car.

I told him that, in owning a gym, I am constantly trying to get people to show up or to make the lifestyle changes necessary to reach their goals. I asked him what his secret was. He said, “I BET ON MYSELF AND IT WORKED.”

My point in telling you this story is to inspire you as much as Mark inspired me. We all have reasons for not making the positive changes we need to make - fear, laziness, past trauma, lack of confidence, and more. But, I can venture to say that none of us have had as big of a physical hurdle as Mark has had.

You will always have excuses. You will always have people betting against you. Prove them wrong.

BET ON YOURSELF.
